How much time to I need to set aside for school ?

For a full time student it is a good idea to fly at least 2-3 times a week. Each time you fly will generally be a 2 hour block. This breaks down to 4-6 hours at the airport a week plus the time needed at home to prepare for the lesson. Less than this, and too much time is spent between lessons creating a need for too much review. More than this is usually to fast of a pace.

For the part-time student, the answer is as much time as you can comfortably fit in. Once a week tends to be good. Much less than that and to much is lost between lessons.

How long does it take to get a private pilot's license ?

This answer varies from student to student. However, in general if you are flying 2-3 times a week it should take between 4-6 months to get your license. Each lesson will usually be 2 hours and you should be studying that much at home for each lesson.

How much does it cost to get my private pilot's license ?

This is one of those tricky questions because most people aren't going to answer you straight. The federal regulations require you to have a minimum of 40 hours in order to get your license. Many schools use this number to quote you a price, and although it is possible to do you training in that many hours it is not very practical for most people. Realistically most people starting from scratch need closer to the national average of 65 hours. This price breaks down to +/- $100 per hour for the plane and $40 per hour for the instructor. This amount of time will total between $9000-$10000.

Are there any additional costs I need to know about ?

  • Training supplies - $300
  • Written test fee - $90
  • Medical certificate - $65-$100
  • Final exam fees - $300

Do I need perfect eye sight to be a pilot ?

Not at all. Your vision simply needs to be correctable to 20/20. So wearing contacts or eye glasses is fine. Even if you are color blind you can still take an eye test demonstrating your ability that allows you to still get your license.

I've heard you need a college degree to be a pilot is this true?

This only applies to those of you wishing to be a commercial pilot, they do require a 4 year degree of some kind.

Is it dangerous to be a pilot ?

One of the first questions most people ask is, is flying safe?  To quote from the 'Be A Pilot' web site, "General aviation is as safe as any other mode of travel, if not safer. In other words, flying is as safe as you make it. How to fly safely, and to deal with the rare emergencies that are beyond the pilot's influence, will be covered in your training to make you a safe and responsible pilot. Most accidents are at least somewhat pilot related which is why we stress safety in your training.
